ROAST MASTER: JESSE JOYCE, '96
Jesse started his comedy career in Pittsburgh in 1998. In 2001 he made the move to New York City and since then and has been making a name for himself in cities and countries you’ve heard of as one of the hottest young comics working today. He attributes his comic instincts to growing up with his entertaining family. By following the example of his Uncle Michael, a former clown in the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus and his great uncles, founders of the International Juggling Association, Joyce developed his own unique brand of comic charisma without throwing or balancing stuff or getting in or out of a tiny car. Jesse has been seen on the inaugural season of Comedy Central’s Live At Gotham, and his Live At Gotham segment on Comedy Central’s website remains in the top most watched clip for the season. In addition he has filmed Weekly Evil segments for The Root of All Evil also for the Comedy Central website. Throughout 2007 Jesse was invited to be part of the Comedy Central on Campus College Tour. He’s been the host of AMC’s Date Night, as well as appearing on Entertainment Tonight, and Lifetime. His debut CD Joyce To The World has been well received and is played regularly on XM and Sirius Satellite Radio. In addition, Jesse can be regularly heard on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom morning show and The Montreal Comedy Hour on the CBC in Canada. Since 2007 Jesse has been one of the four members of the nationally touring Comedy Addiction Tour featuring four comedians tackling the subject of their own addiction and recovery performing in theaters nation wide. He’s a contributor and a member of the marginally prestigious “panel of experts” in the book The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Jokes and was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article about comics using the internet to promote themselves. Jesse was invited by Eddie Brill, the booker of Letterman to participate in The Great American Comedy Festival 2008 – a tribute comedy festival to Johnny Carson. He is currently shooting his first feature film entitled “Stags” produced by the legendary Ben Barenholz (Raising Arizona, Requiem for a Dream) due out in early 2009. Jesse has also written numerous TV and radio commercials as well as various print ads. In 2001 he received 2 American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) for his writing. Jesse has entertained audiences in 13 countries on 4 continents; all over the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Djbouti, Kuwait, Iraq, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Switzerland where he has appointed himself The Father of Swiss Comedy, as hes the only comedian hes ever heard of performing in Switzerland. In 2007, Mr. Jacoby was awarded with Bishop Canevin's Distinguished Educator Honors. He has been married for over 40 years to his wife Sherry, an Intermediate Unit school counselor. Their four children are all Bishop Canevin graduates: Tracey '87, Eric '89, Carrie '92 and Neal '94. Eric and Neal are Assistant Coaches for the Football team. Mr. and Mrs. Jacoby have nine grandchildren: Mia, Jacob, Cole, Parker, Emma, Adeline, Brady, Anna and Carson. St. Philip parishioners, the Jacoby's are residents of Crafton for 16 years.
A precedent was set in January 1979 when Mr. Maurer assumed the leadership of Canevin. Mr. Maurer was the first lay headmaster of a diocesan district high school. The more than twenty-two years that Mr. Maurer had served as Headmaster is the longest tenure of any Canevin Headmaster. Under his leadership Canevin Catholic High School celebrated the thirty-fifth anniversary of its founding and also underwent a fourth evaluation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Once again, Canevin Catholic was not only given Accreditation but likewise cited for having an outstanding academic program. The fifth Middle States Evaluation occurred in 1995, and since that time Canevin Catholic has maintained fully accredited status. At the end of the 2001-2002 school year, Mr. Maurer retired, but he is a frequent visitor to the school and recently spoke at the 50th Anniversary celebration.
